Why is Sunita Williams Still in Space? The Starliner Saga
Astronauts Sunita Williams and her colleague, Barry “Butch” Wilmore, launched on June 5, 2024, aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft for what was planned to be a short-duration Crew Flight Test (CFT) mission to the ISS.
However, during the flight, the spacecraft experienced several technical issues, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions. These problems raised serious concerns about the vehicle’s ability to safely return the astronauts to Earth. After an extensive investigation, NASA and Boeing made the difficult decision to not use Starliner for the return journey.
The Starliner capsule was returned to Earth without a crew in September 2024, leaving Williams and Wilmore on the ISS awaiting an alternative ride home.
The Return Plan: Coming Home on SpaceX’s Dragon
NASA turned to its commercial partner, SpaceX, to bring the astronauts home. They were added to the return leg of the SpaceX Crew-9 mission.
The current plan is: March 12, 2025: The SpaceX Crew-10 mission launches aboard the Endurance Dragon capsule to the ISS.
March 14-15: A two-day handover period between Crew-9 and Crew-10.
March 17: The Crew-9 Dragon, carrying Williams, Wilmore, NASA’s Nick Hague, and Roscosmos’s Aleksandr Gorbunov, will undock from the ISS.
March 19, 2025: The spacecraft is scheduled to splash down off the coast of Florida at 3:27 AM IST (Previous date: March 16).

Wilmore returned to Earth on March 19, 2025. They traveled on SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which separated from the International Space Station (ISS) at 10:35 am (IST) on March 17 and landed in the ocean off the coast of Florida at 3:27 am (IST) on March 19. Their return took a total of 17 hours. Along with them, two other astronauts of the Crew-9 mission, Nick Hague and Alexander Gorbunov of Roscosmos, also returned to Earth.
Williams and WilmoreThe lid of the spacecraft was closed at 08.15 am. After this, undocking will take place at 10.35 am, in which the spacecraft is separated from the ISS. On March 19, at 02.41 am, there will be a deorbit burn (entry of the spacecraft into the atmosphere). The spacecraft will land in the sea at 03.27 am. There will be a press conference regarding the return to Earth at 05.00 am. After all these things are done, Sunita and Butch will return on March 19, 2025 as per Indian time. It will take a total of 17 hours for Sunita and Bull to return to Earth.
After a successful landing, the crew will be sent to NASA’s Johnson Space Center for a few days for routine post mission medical checkups. Astronauts face bone and muscle deterioration, radiation exposure and vision loss due to challenging conditions for survival, in addition to the psychological challenges of loneliness

After Williams and Wilmore leave Earth’s orbit on March 19, the spacecraft will land in the water near the Florida coast in the US.
